Pompejanum, Aschaffenburg

Inspired by the excavations in Pompeii, King Ludwig I of Bavaria had this building constructed from 1840 – 1848 by Friedrich von Gärtner in the form of a Roman dwelling house. The frescoes and mosaic floors of the colourful rooms were designed according to Roman patterns. Today they provide a very apt background for the exhibition of original art works from the State ancient art collection. In the surroundings of the building Roman portraits, statues and decorative marble pieces are on show; in the kitchen, business and living rooms objects from daily life are presented. In the Loggia and in the Pergula more display cabinets present further objects from ancient households from styli to bronze dog tags, from fishing hooks to locks. Medicinal and cosmetic implements, jewellery, toys and much more are also on display.
The presentations are complimented with comprehensive documentation on the history of Pompeii.
