Those who have used the motorway near Würzburg will already know the impressive fortress on the Marienberg Mountain. In 1000 BC a Celtic refuge fort was constructed on the site; in the Middle Ages it was first used as a residential fortress and then as a residence of the prince-bishops. In 1631 the Swedish succeeded in capturing the fortress and later it was developed into a Baroque fortress.
Today you can enjoy the beautiful view over Würzburg as well as viewing the collection of art from the Bronze Age through to Tilman Riemenschneider. A visit to the prince-bishops treasure trove gives visitors a good impression of the former wealth of the church.
