The castle is one of the most significant constructions from the German Renaissance and dominates the townscape of Aschaffenburg. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century in place of the destroyed medieval castle, the keep of which is still in existence.
Since 1972 part of the town's archives and art collection is housed here: sculptures from the time of the construction of the castle, views of the city, objects from the guilds and furniture. There is an excellent collection of German and foreign ceramics, including tin-glazed earthenware, stone ware and porcelain. A local speciality is the impressive collection of Dammer earthenware. The painting collection includes classic modern works from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Christian Schad. In the castle there is also a state gallery to be admired, the largest branch of the Bavarian State Art Collection. The gallery houses the most significant Cranach collection in Europe. You will also find the State Court Library, the Castle Winery and the Castle Wine Tavern.
