Astheim Charterhouse

Astheim Charterhouse

In 1409, the Cartesian Monastery Marienbrück was constructed near Volkach. This order can be traced back to Saint Bruno, who formed the first community of monks near Grenoble in 1084. It is a contemplative order which means that its members seek proximity to God in silence and in the isolation of their cells. After its secularisation the monastery remained in the possession of the diocese of Würzburg and today accommodates a Christian museum. Over 600 pieces of art from the 14th to 19th centuries provide visitors with an insight into Christian art as well as focusing on Christian metaphors.
